Audiovisual Artist and Film-maker

¿AM I?

Pavel Tavares is a Brazilian filmmaker and video artist. He studied Design of Image and Sound at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). He began as teacher of Audiovisual Project in the same university, lecturing documentary. He received a scholarship as an audiovisual archivist in the same institution. He was distinguished several times for his achievements as student and teacher. He holds a postgraduate diploma in Cinema from the University Torquato Ditella (UTDT). He was selected for the Talents BAFICI, VGKI summer school, Looking China Program, the Young Art Bienal (Argentina) and won a scholarship to be Fellow in the Flaherty Seminar (NY, USA). Some of his documentaries are Jasy Porã (Argentina), Алексндр (Russia), 小寨 (China), Tarkovsky Napes (video-essay) and Ojo de Mar (Argentina). His work has been presented internationally in exhibitions, festivals and articles. He has won prizes like best short movie, best experimental video and best photography. He currently lives in Europe, focused on his artistic work with art installations and new hybrid projects. Interested in the distinctiveness of each culture, identities, borders and their crosses, he seeks a distinctive perception of time and space through experimental audiovisual art.

Jasy Porã (BEAUTIFUL MOON)

The daily life of the village Mbya Guaraní Jasy Porã, in which its children, who form a choir, demonstrate an intrinsic wisdom of living in harmony and serenity with the environment, with simplicity and beauty at every moment of the day. The temporality, the daily cycle, the musicality of the jungle and the mimetized men. Karaí, Monica, Mabel, Frederic, Santos Divino and their brothers invite us to know their way of feeling and being in the mount of Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina.

A poetic interpretation of the life of Alexander, an orthodox priest who raised a group of Christian motorcyclists and who currently lives dramas in all areas of his life: expelled from the church, divorced from his wife, forbidden to see his children and in The attempt of new life falls with a cardiac arrest that makes it captive in the city Kirov, his mirror, in the center of Russia.

小寨 (The Last Small Village)

A day with the Yao people, living their work, rituals and routine in the early spring of in 小寨.The culture and the contrast between the ancient and the modern in the rice terraces of Longji, China.

Among the mountains in Patagonia, a syncretic culture struggles to not disappear. The four seasons mark the inhabitants’ pace, with their rituals and routines pierced through by diverse changes. A hypnotic experience of resistance and beauty, of solitude and nostalgia, of life and death.

A workshop to look with sensitivity to everyday life and find the aesthetic sense in routine experiences through the own and distinctive audiovisual realization as a way to rediscover and interpret their environment.

SERTÃO CINEMA

A journey through different periods and representations of this Brazilian territory, with a wealth of genres from western to melodrama, from unique fantastic to brutal realism. The Sertão is a source of inspiration and audiovisual catarsis to understand the country of contrasts.
